Most Teens Don’t Use Substances

Share:

Most teens don’t use substances. Most students have the perception that more of their peers are using substances than actually are. In reality, according to Monitoring the Future’s 2024 survey:

Nearly 70% of teens have never used alcohol.

Over 75% of teens have never vaped.

Nearly 80% of teens have never used cannabis.

Nearly 90% of high schoolers have never misused prescription drugs.

Most teens don’t use substances. So what are some possible reasons why sobriety is the popular choice?

  1. Underage substance use is illegal.

Even substances that are legalized for adults are illegal for teen use. All of the substances listed above have legal consequences. This could include fines, community service, or even jail time. Not to mention in or out of school suspension and other school and home consequences.

  1. Substance use harms physical health.

Alcohol harms your liver, vaping harms your lungs, marijuana harms your brain, and prescription drugs can result in overdose. No substance is safe. Teen brains are still developing, and all of these substances can cause damage to the developing brain. Until the brain is fully developed, using substances is risky and can cause unseen harm.

  1. Substance use harms mental health.

Although many students who use substances report using them to cope with stress, all of the substances listed are associated with poor mental health, including anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. Additionally, vaping increases stress, and cannabis use can cause paranoia and psychosis.

  1. Underage substance use can put your future in jeopardy.

Substance use can result in failing grades and school attendance. Substance use disorders can cause use to overwhelm your life, leaving future plans disregarded. It’s important to be careful and responsible with your future and set yourself up to reach your goals. Not using substances is a great way to do that.
