Even substances that are legalized for adults are illegal for teen use. All of the substances listed above have legal consequences. This could include fines, community service, or even jail time. Not to mention in or out of school suspension and other school and home consequences.
Alcohol harms your liver, vaping harms your lungs, marijuana harms your brain, and prescription drugs can result in overdose. No substance is safe. Teen brains are still developing, and all of these substances can cause damage to the developing brain. Until the brain is fully developed, using substances is risky and can cause unseen harm.
Although many students who use substances report using them to cope with stress, all of the substances listed are associated with poor mental health, including anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. Additionally, vaping increases stress, and cannabis use can cause paranoia and psychosis.
Substance use can result in failing grades and school attendance. Substance use disorders can cause use to overwhelm your life, leaving future plans disregarded. It’s important to be careful and responsible with your future and set yourself up to reach your goals. Not using substances is a great way to do that.
